Things seaweed taught me this month.

Hi friend,

One of my favourite parts of running Get Kelp is that every month I end up learning something I wasn't expecting. This month, it wasn't really about seaweed.

It was about maps.

...and flavour.

...and what it actually takes to build a seaweed industry.

A few days ago, I was in Seattle at the Seaweed Soirée. I was expecting to spend the evening talking about kelp products. Instead, I found myself in conversations about policy, food processing, and what the next five years of seaweed might look like for the Pacific Northwest.

It was a reminder that growing seaweed is only one small piece of the puzzle.

Each article I wrote this month was sparked by a different question or curiosity, and looking back, I realized they all connect in unexpected ways. A simple question like "What does seaweed taste like?" became a story about culture and food. Learning how ocean mapping works changed how you see marine protected areas. Even writing about agriculture became less about seaweed itself and more about the systems it's part of.

That's one of the things I enjoy most about this work.

The more I learn about seaweed, the more I learn about the people, places, and systems connected to it.

So rather than simply sharing what I've published this month, I thought I'd share a few of the ideas that have been shaping how I think about seaweed lately.

I hope they spark a little curiosity for you, too.

Stay curious. Stay salty.

Out in the World

The bigger ideas I've been thinking about lately

Kelp Mapping & Protection

One map, multiple layers, and one big realization: protecting kelp forests is more complex than it first appears. This story explores how mapping is helping scientists, governments, and communities better understand and manage our coasts.

Seattle's Seaweed Soirée

One evening, dozens of conversations, and one big lesson: every person in attendance approached seaweed from a different angle. Food. Research. Farming. Policy. It was a reminder that seaweed isn't one story — it's many, all connected.

A mix of what people are reading, sharing, and asking about most.

POPULAR What Does Seaweed Actually Taste Like?

Probably the question I get asked most often. The answer depends entirely on the species—from fresh and leafy to smoky, savoury, and deeply umami.

Seaweed Anatomy Explained

Holdfast. Stipe. Blade. Pneumatocysts. Once you know what these parts do, every beach walk becomes a little more interesting.

Can We Restore Kelp Forests?

Around the world, people are working to restore disappearing kelp forests. Here's how restoration and seaforestation differ, where they're working, and why healthy kelp forests matter.

Seaweed in Agriculture

Seaweed has been used on farms for generations, but today's research is uncovering new opportunities—from soil health and crop resilience to livestock feed and regenerative agriculture.

Books Worth Reading

Some of my favourite books and guides for anyone who wants to learn more about seaweed without the device, whether you're just getting started or already hooked.

The Seaweed Brief

The defining signals shaping the seaweed industry — delivered monthly.

Seaweed Brief is Get Kelp's premium monthly digest for professionals following the seaweed sector more closely. It goes beyond the headlines to break down the signals shaping the industry—bringing together research, policy, markets, and innovation, with context on what it means and where things are heading next.

Product Spotlight

Atlantic Kelp Iodine Capsules

One question I hear regularly is about iodine. Seaweed is one of the richest natural sources, but the amount can vary widely between species and servings, making it hard to know how much you're getting.

For a consistent, measured option, these Atlantic kelp capsules offer a simple alternative to cooking with seaweed every day, especially for those looking to monitor or support their iodine intake.

Why I Like It:

🌿 Standardized iodine content
💊 Easy daily supplement
🌊 Made from Atlantic kelp
📚 A practical option for nutrition
